The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles (AIA LA) announced the winners of the 9th annual Restaurant Design Awards (RDA) on Saturday, June 22nd, 2013 on the Expo Design Floor of Dwell on Design at the Los Angeles Convention Center. BCV Architect’s Belcampo Meat Co, located in Larkspur, CA, won for Best Restaurant Design, and Best New Concept.
“The jury was so captivated by one entry in particular that they created a special award on the spot and presented a “Best New Concept” for the first time in the history of the RDA’s.” (that’s Belcampo!)
Louise Rice and Julia Stenderup of BCV were on hand to accept the awards.
Margot Dogherty, one of the judges, had these nice things to say on why they chose Belcampo: “We all loved your project – as much for the design as for the high-quality farm-to-table aesthetic that it represents. The layout of the restaurant and the materials selected did such a great job of translating the premise of Belcampo into a physical space. The restaurant has a friendly and communal feel and seems organically connected with the land and the environment that produced the food that the diners are about to eat. But the design also suggests a refinement and sophistication which signals that whatever that food might be, it’s going to be authentic and delicious. Like the best designs, despite all the details and deliberate choices it embodies, this one feels effortless and timeless.”
The distinguished jury- comprised of writer/editor Margot Dougherty, restauranteur Warner Ebbink, and Architect George Kelly, AIA- selected sixteen projects as finalists for this year’s competition: 9 in the Restaurant Category, 4 in the Cafe/Bar category, and 3 in the Lounge/Nightclub category. Following a special panel discussion featuring the 2013 nominees and jurors, Behind Good Restaurant Design, on Friday, June 21 at Dwell on Design, the Restaurant Design Awards Ceremony took place about 24 hours later on the same stage.
