On Friday, January 16th, the historic Quarters 10 building on Yerba Buena Island will be moved from its current location at Northgate and Macalla Roads to a new home overlooking Clipper Cove. The move will provide space for the new Westbound Yerba Buena on- and off-ramps and a permanent home for the landmark building and its accompanying garage.
BCV studied several potential locations but chose Clipper Cove both because it was a hillside site and was oriented toward the signature tower of the Bay Bridge's new Eastern Span.
Constructed in 1948, Quarters 10 was the only housing built on Yerba Buena Island during the immediate post-World War II period. It is located on the southwestern side of the Naval Training Station's Senior Officers' Quarters District and was designed by the Bureau of Yards and Docks, the branch of the US Navy responsible for building and maintaining navy yards, drydocks, and other related facilities during that time.
Quarters 10 and its garage (Building 267) were added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in 2008 as significant examples of modem military residential design. The images above show the current site and an interior view looking out at the Eastern span of the Bay Bridge and ramp construction. BCV Architects, working with CMG Landscape Architecture, Page and Turnbull historic preservation architects, and TICD, the development team that is revisioning Treasure Island, developed the masterplan for a new setting and potential uses for the building.
Quarters 10 will anchor a new public park above Clipper Cove and may be used to house offices and visitor-serving retail uses. The project was carried out for the Treasure Island Development Authority (TIDA), the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA), and the San Francisco Office of Economic Development by a team led by AECOM that included Alan R. Dreyfuss (Architect), Patrick J. McDermott (Architect), and Kelly Cobeen (Structural Engineer). More information about the I-80 Interchange Improvement Project is available here.
On November 19, 2014, project construction manager Parsons Brinckerhoff moved Building 267 up and over the hill to Clipper Cove. Quarters 10 will follow suit on the evening of January 16th, 2015.
The site at Clipper Cove references the original hillside location and reinterprets Q10’s previous views of the old Bay Bridge with an axial view of the new eastern span tower curving gracefully beyond Yerba Buena to the east.
